question

Is the word niche really pronounced nitch in English?

[identity profile] seiyaharris.livejournal.com 2007-10-17 09:28 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes. Everyone I know says 'neesh', however *G*

see, in Danish, you pronounce it sort of like 'neesh' ( more like 'neeshuh' but whatever ) but I've heard it a couple of times this week pronounced 'nitch' on teevee, so I was confussled.

Was this, by any chance, in American tv shows?

[identity profile] seiyaharris.livejournal.com 2007-10-17 10:08 am (UTC)(link)
*G* it's not an entirely American thing, and not all Americans say it like that but yes.

[identity profile] ihearthings-ii.livejournal.com 2007-10-17 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
hmmm. I gotta admit, the people who said it looked like. um. *cough*airheads*cough* which is what got me wondering if it was correct in the first place.

lol yeah, it's definitely a certain type of person. Though I think I once heard Lionel Luthor butcher a French word in Smallville and really, that ws not something I thought he'd do!

I say "neesh," but many Americans do say "nitch."

Just more reason for the French to hate us. ;)

[identity profile] ihearthings-ii.livejournal.com 2007-10-17 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
but you'd say that the right way to say it is 'neesh', then?

[identity profile] withdiamonds.livejournal.com 2007-10-17 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I say "nitch."

[identity profile] ihearthings-ii.livejournal.com 2007-10-17 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
hee! I kind of want do do a poll, now.

*blinks*

*checks his Wordweb*

Wow.

I never realized "nitch" isn't a word.

*blinks more*

Okay, that's TOTALLY a midwest pronunciation thing, which is interesting, because supposedly if you get a midwesterner to actually enunciate, it's more-or-less American Standard, newscaster-accent, etc. But I've always heard it "nitch" (not thinking about it) and read it "neesh" with a very soft ee & sh, in other words, the French pronunciation. Like, things fit into a niche, craggy rocks, etc, but the merchandising parallel is a "nitch" market.

And it's going to bother me forEVar that I never even reconciled them as the same word in my head, oi. crazy, wacky, INSANE language, to make no mention of regional dialects, gah....

Most everyone that I know pronounces it "nitch" but a few pronounce it correctly.

[identity profile] ihearthings-ii.livejournal.com 2007-10-17 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
So you'd say that some variation of 'neesh' would be correct?

[identity profile] hammerhead22.livejournal.com 2007-10-17 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I believe that would be the correct pronunciation.

[identity profile] ihearthings-ii.livejournal.com 2007-10-17 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
okay. thanks!

Sorry to bug you...have been reading crack_impala entries from their beginning. Have come across an entry for a story called "Road that Drives Away." The link is busted, and I didn't want to go wandering around your lj without permission. Did you write this one? The description sounds awfully good. The date it was rec'd there was Feb 28th, 2007. Thanks!
